Cancer Treatment Program, Mooresville hospital wants to help cancer patients
Lake Norman Regional Medical Center will host the American Cancer Society’s Look Good…Feel Better program on Monday, Nov. 17. During the seminar, volunteer cosmetologists will teach female cancer patients how to use make-up and skincare techniques to overcome the appearance-related effects of chemotherapy and radiation.
Look Good…Feel Better is offered through a partnership between the American Cancer Society, the Personal Care Products Council and the National Cosmetology Association. Classes and materials are provided free of charge to women in active cancer treatment. All cosmetology professionals who are part of the program attend a four-hour certification class to become Look Good…Feel Better volunteers.
In addition to the physical and emotional concerns, the side effects of cancer treatment can be devastating to a woman’s self esteem as well. Patients who have participated in Look Good…Feel Better call the program an emotional lifesaver because it helps return a sense of normalcy and self-confidence.
According to the American Cancer Society, there are dozens of anti-cancer drugs in use today, each with potential side effects including hair loss; weight gain or loss; changes in skin pigmentation and texture; skin oiliness, itchiness or peeling; and alterations in nail texture and growth rate. During the Look Good…Feel Better class, women learn about makeup, skin care, nail care and ways to deal with hair loss such as wigs, turbans and scarves.
The Look Good…Feel Better class will be held from 6:30p.m.-8:30p.m. at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center. For more information or to register, please call 1-800-395-LOOK.
