Best activy from Roosevelt School in Cherokee, Iowa. Kelly Pitts’s elementary students at Roosevelt School in Cherokee, Iowa, wanted to make a difference for their teacher and all kids affected by breast cancer by holding a fundraising event.

The students raised over $2,500 by purchasing t-shirts with the proceeds given to the Siouxland Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

Pitts, a teacher for more than 17 years, recently was diagnosed with breast cancer, and is currently undergoing treatment. Several elementary teachers were instrumental in designing two t-shirts reflecting breast cancer awareness: “Mothers, daughters, sisters, friends - we’re in this together” and “Real men wear pink.” The printing was donated by Holton Custom Signs in Cherokee and the students purchased the t-shirts, all in order to raise money.

The Siouxland Affiliate of Komen for the Cure has invested more than $540,000 in community breast health programs in the tri-state area. Up to 75 percent of net proceeds generated by the affiliate stays in Siouxland. The remaining income goes to the national Susan G. Komen for the Cure Grants Program to fund research.
