Wall Street may be bracing for a steep economic downturn, but if the opulent looks at New York Fashion Week are any indication, Seventh Avenue seems to think a recession is far off.

That’s because models wearing rich brocades, metallic tweeds and lavish gold wools topped with extravagant fur and feather trims, as well as plush velvet smoking jackets and tuxedos, cascaded down the runway this week, showcasing luxurious mens- and women’s wear trends designers expect will be big sellers next fall.

“From the rich fabrics to the decadent draping,” says Claire Hamilton, an editor at WGSN, a trend analysis group, “everything’s just more opulent this season.”
